Pie
I don’t know if it really happened
or how I still see
the light on their smiles
as they danced under the tree
in your backyard
where we did play
with the balls and bikes
on that beautiful day
There you were
at the grill
turning the tenderloin
so we’d have our fill
Laughing with your teeth
It gave you such a thrill
This life that you made
Your family was my wine
My mountain your hill
Your blood my vine
earth to my till
Now it’s passed
as all things must
like apples to pie
and pie to crust
and crust to cream
and cream to mouth
Forget the forks
we’re laughing now
making a mess
as we knew how
And all this time
I still see
the light that shines
through shadows
and trees
onto children
whose smiles
I hear for miles
As they call your name
